Supporting people with learning disabilities

My favourite thing about my job is talking to residents - getting to know them and hearing their stories.

Gyn Loh Care Worker

I’m a care worker at one of East Living’s supported living schemes for people with learning disabilities.

I started working here in October last year and I’ve enjoyed getting to know the residents. We have 16 flats and everyone requires a different level of care so it’s always busy. The morning is the busiest time, I normally arrive around 7.00am and check the shift rota, the person in charge will then tell me which residents I will be with that day.

Some residents will need support for personal care, dressing and going to a day centre or college so I will help them first. Others may need me to support them to make breakfast or prompt with their medication. Once everyone is up I will then go round and make sure everyone is happy and anyone who needs to get to an appointment, such as a doctor’s appointment, does.

My favourite thing about my job is talking to residents - getting to know them and hearing their stories. I am from Malaysia and sometimes my English isn’t great so they will correct me and help me to learn. East Thames is also sponsoring me to study City & Guilds in working with people with learning disabilities, which will help me progress further in my career, hopefully here!
